When paper is a good fit
A printed weekly sheet works for an in-person group that enjoys marking picks together. No device or login is needed. The host must collect the same sheet version, record the deadline and grade outcomes. Remote entries require an agreed submission channel and timestamp.
Free 2026 NFL weekly PDFs are useful for straight-up picks and a written numerical tiebreaker. They are static downloads; schedule changes after printing require checking the current schedule and telling the group. Paper picks do not automatically become online entries.
What a spreadsheet needs
Use one row per player, one column per matchup, a result key and separate weekly and cumulative totals. Protect formulas and keep an audit record for corrections. Mark unsubmitted picks distinctly from unresolved games so an empty result does not look like a loss.
Spread and confidence scoring need additional rules and validation. For confidence, prevent duplicate point allocations; for spread, distinguish a football winner from a cover and define pushes. The commissioner still needs to reconcile submissions and update results.
What an online league changes
Sportsball provides shareable sheets, supported lock settings, automatic results and weekly/season leaderboards. Players use their own accounts; the host reviews the eligible slate and opens it through the manage page. The optional native app adds notifications, but browser play requires no download.
Online tools reduce manual grading, not every administrative task. You still need to choose rules, invite players, communicate deadlines and follow unresolved results. Product-supported settings constrain the format; arbitrary spreadsheet conventions may not map directly.
A safe mid-season migration
No automatic historical-score import
Sportsball does not offer an automatic spreadsheet-total import for private league standings. Start a new online competition from the eligible week and retain the old spreadsheet as a separate archive. Do not promise that prior picks will be recreated or counted inside the app.
If your group wants a combined external season record, define the calculation openly and keep it separate from the online leaderboard. Do not add Even points, confidence values and Odds beans as if they were interchangeable. Agree on the transition before collecting the new week's picks.
A full switch at the next season can be simpler. Test accounts, invitation links, format and deadline settings with a small group first. Keep the old records accessible without maintaining two competing official submission paths.
Pick the workflow your group will use
Choose paper for a simple in-person ritual, a spreadsheet for custom manual rules with a willing administrator, or online play for remote entries and less result-entry work. Host pricing pays for the software; players join free. No option here is a promise of legal cash wagering or guaranteed predictions.
