Confidence Pool Alternative: NFL Odds Pick'em
How a confidence pool works
With N games, each player assigns each value from 1 through N once. A correct pick earns the points assigned to that game. A missed high-confidence choice costs more potential points than a missed low-confidence choice. Bye weeks can change N, so the allocation rule must match the sheet.
This appeals to players who enjoy ranking certainty. It adds an allocation task and requires validation of duplicate or missing ranks. It is not inherently inferior or proven to cause more ties; choose it if your group values that decision.
What Odds changes
Sportsball Odds still asks which team wins. The sheet displays the beans earned for a correct favorite or underdog, and the player chooses without assigning a 1-to-N rank. Correct underdogs generally earn more because they are less likely, not because the player ranked them higher.
Two different totals
In a confidence pool, correct picks ranked 5 and 2 earn 7 points. In an illustrative Odds sheet, correct choices worth 6 and 17 earn 23 beans. These totals are not comparable standings units, and moving to Odds does not preserve the old confidence assignments.
Sportsball supports Even, Spread and Odds, not a confidence-ranking mode. If unique confidence allocation is a requirement, choose a provider that explicitly supports it or keep a validated manual sheet.
When your group might prefer Odds
Odds fits players who want different rewards for correct outcomes without ranking a full slate. Values are visible on the sheet, which can make the task easier to explain. A bigger value still does not mean a better prediction: probability and reward both matter.
Choose Even if equal points and simplicity matter most. Choose Spread if judging the winning margin against a handicap is the goal. Do not describe all three as confidence pools with different branding; they have different scoring rules.
Switch formats deliberately
Before launching the competition, show a worked example and publish the format, roster policy and pick deadline. First-kickoff, per-game and Sunday 1pm Eastern locking create different opportunities to change later picks. The value system does not override those locks.
For a mid-season switch, start a separate leaderboard or explain an external transition plan before picks arrive. Do not combine old confidence totals with new bean totals inside the app or promise a score import. Jelly beans have no cash value; the host fee is for software, not a pooled wager.
