UNDERDOG JELLY BEAN SCORING

The Pick em Format That Finally Gets It Right

Bigger risk, bigger reward. Same idea for NFL, MLB, and Oscars.

We built a scoring system where risk is rewarded and strategy matters. Favorites pay fewer beans; underdogs pay more. Used in our NFL pick em, MLB pick em, and Oscars pick em games. No spreadsheets—just pick and watch the leaderboard.

Why Traditional Pick em Games Fall Short

Straight Up Games

Everyone just picks the favorites every week. There's no reward for taking risks, no strategic depth, and upsets feel totally random. Where's the fun in that?

Against the Spread Games

You're doing mental math while watching games. "Wait, what was the spread again?" You end up cheering for numbers instead of teams. And that late touchdown that doesn't affect the actual game? It just flipped your result. Frustrating!

Plus, spreads change during the week, they're confusing for casual fans, and honestly... they're just not fun at parties.

We Found a Better Way

Underdog Jelly Bean Scoring gives you the best of both worlds: the simplicity of straight-up games with the strategic depth of spread games - minus all the headaches.

  • Root for teams to WIN
No spreads, no point margins. Just cheer for your team to win. That's it.
  • Risk is rewarded
Bold picks pay off. Pick an underdog and watch them win? You just earned way more beans than the safe pick.
  • No math required
The bean count is right there on every team button. No calculations, no guesswork.
  • Anyone can play
Perfect for office games, parties, and groups with mixed football knowledge. Casual fans and die-hards compete on equal footing.

Here's the Fun Part

Every team button shows you exactly how many beans you'll earn if they win. That's it. No formulas, no calculations - just look at the number.

How it works:

  • Toss-ups: ~10 beans - Close games pay about the same on both sides.
  • Favorites: fewer beans - Bigger favorites pay less. The number is on the button.
  • Underdogs: more beans - The bigger the underdog, the more a correct pick is worth. Locks pay both sides from a smaller ticket — not a 40-bean long shot.

You see the bean count right on the button. Pick the favorite? Fewer beans. Pick the underdog to pull off the upset? More beans. Same idea for NFL pick em, MLB pick em, and Oscars pick em—just pick who you think will win.

Here's Where It Gets Really Fun

Unlike other games where you're locked in at the start of the week, public NFL and MLB challenges let you change picks until each game kicks off. Sportsball private NFL leagues let the host lock the slate at first kickoff (the default), per game, or Sunday 1pm ET. On per-game or Sunday 1pm slates, your strategy can evolve as Sunday unfolds.

The Sunday Strategy:

  • Morning games set the stage - see how your picks are doing
  • Afternoon games let you adjust - behind? Swap some picks for underdogs!
  • Sunday Night is decision time - play it safe or go for broke?
  • Monday Night is the ultimate closer - you know exactly where you stand

Behind going into the late games? Swap your safe picks for big underdogs. Ahead? Lock in favorites and coast to victory. It's a game within the game—and way more fun than "set and forget." (Public NFL and MLB challenges support late changes; private NFL hosts choose first kickoff, per-game, or Sunday 1pm ET; Oscars lock before the show.)

Playing for Jelly Beans (and Bragging Rights)

This is a fun social game—not a way to make money. You're competing for jelly beans and bragging rights. The same underdog jelly bean scoring applies to NFL pick em, MLB pick em, and Oscars pick em on Sportsball.

  • Earn beans from correct picks
Every winning pick adds beans to your total. The riskier the pick, the more beans on the button.
  • Private NFL leagues: beans from picks only
Season rank is the sum of your correct-pick beans. There is no extra Top-3 placement bonus in private NFL pick'em.
  • Beans accumulate all season
Weekly and season leaderboards track the same jelly-bean total—bragging rights, not cash.
